They come with the filter membrane charged with some sort of glycerine which gets washed out when you prime it. They say the glycerine degrades over time, hence the 3 year life. If you prime it with water, the life extends to 5 years. So long as you keep it wet, I dont see how it can have a life? I think that is probably more to do with "being conservative" and getting you to buy/replace the consumables. Obviously if it freezes, it'l bust the membranes.
